According to UN projections, a child will be born somewhere on the planet today who will tip the world’s population to seven billion. The number marks an important, and, to many, worrying, milestone at a time of rising energy and food prices, environmental changes and increasing competition for dwindling resources.

Demographic research shows that the number of people inhabiting the world did not hit one billion until 1804, and it took 123 more years to reach the two billion mark in 1927. After that, it accelerated at a dizzying rate – the global population stood at three billion in 1959, four billion in 1974, five billion in 1987 and six billion in 1998.

The UN predicts that, with about two babies being born every second, the world population will reach eight billion by 2025, nine billion by 2050 and 10 billion by 2083. But those projections could end up much higher or lower, depending on factors including access to birth control, infant mortality rates and average life expectancy rates – which have increased from 48 years in 1950 to 69 years today.

We have this set up on carpet, so the fact that it’s a little thin makes little difference for us. We just didn’t want our baby’s face in the carpet constantly (I believe there are carcinogens in the stain sealants and we live in an apt. so don’t see much point in shampooing or anything). The only thing that’s annoying is the letters and numbers pop out of the mat which I don’t really like because I know he’s going to rip the thing apart as he gets older (he’s 9 months now). But, he has taken a couple little tumbles and not cried so the mat combined with the carpet underneath must make a decent amount of padding while providing a stable, firm surface for him to practice being more mobile. All in all it was a good purchase for me but know that it is slightly thing (like it says, 3/8 in thick) and it can be taken apart easily (by you or your baby)....

The It’s cute. I purchased it mainly because it fit the color scheme in our living room, and I liked the letters and numbers on it. In hindsight, that’s silly because it’s best used for babies 5 or 6 months old to about a year or so, once they start walking (once they’re older than that, there’s no way they’re going to stay on a mat this small anyway). They’re not learning their alphabet this early, so the alphabet design on the mat is pointless.
