City firefighters quell potential haz-mat incident
A potential hazardous materials incident at a Blackburn Industrial Park facility Sunday night brought a full response from Gloucester Fire Department and rescue personnel, but did not result in any injuries or damage to the business.
The incident at the Anchor Seal plant — which moved here from Danvers over the summer and, among other things, makes synthetic skin that has been used for everything from Disney-style animatronics to key elements for prosthetics — began at 7 p.m. when a fire alarm activated within the building.
Upon arrival at Anchor Seal — located at 54 Great Republic Drive — crews found smoke filling the facility from the office area of the building, according to Deputy Fire Chief Steve Aiello.
Crews entering the building used self-contained breathing equipment and, upon further investigation, found liquid spilling from an oven onto the floor of the laboratory in the building, with smoke coming from the oven.
