According to Housel, Hernandez-Salgado was traveling east on the Black Horse Pike at about 2:21 a.m. Aug. 7 when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a taxi traveling west. After the crash, Hernandez-Salgado's car came to rest in dense marshland.
Officials say he was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of the accident, and that two people were with him inside the car - a male passenger in the front seat and his girlfriend, Mayelin Perez, 32, of Pleasantville, in the back seat.
When police arrived at the accident scene, only Hernandez-Salgado and the unidentified male passenger were located in the vehicle. Both men told police there were no other passengers in the car, and they were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered in the crash. Hernandez-Salgado's blood alcohol content was above the legal limit, police said.
Police said they did not know Perez had been thrown from the vehicle. It was not until the next day, when Perez's family members told police they could not locate her and Hernandez-Salgado reported her missing from their home, that police found her personal items in the vehicle.
