However, if you do want to have a concern, Direct Injection is one you can argue about. It's new, and based on Diesels, my concern with it is how it will handle bad fuel, dirt, water, etc. Will we see injector failure? Also with the Direct injection will we have valve carbon issues since the fuel doesn't touch the intake valves making cleaning additives not work to clean intake valves?
Also as to comparing the EcoBoost to other turbo engines, yes the idea has been used, what makes EcoBoost unique is the tuning and applications of it. Where previous Turbos were used in sports/sporty cars (GM's DI tubo was in Solstice/Sky), and were tuned to make horsepower. Genereally they were about horsepower. I'm going to switch to the 2.0L EcoBoost to compare (since there isn't a lot the 3.5L can easily be compared to). If you look the 2.0 EcoBoost Explorer makes 240 Horsepower, not that impressive. However, it makes 270lb/ft of torque at 1750-4000 RPM (as opposed to the 3.5L V6 that makes 255@4100), making it good for a large heavy vehicle, but not as easy to advertise as a High horsepower engine, which to me is the big gamble as to if you can get consumers to understand torque (less of an issue on pickups, but going to be interesting on the SUV/CUV's).
