I have a tach for a car that will work with 4,6,8, cyl motors. but don't know if it will work on a 2 cycle 4 cyl boat motor.
it should if connected properly. however, you don't specify the year model engine and therefore to be safe you should consult your local boat dealer as it is possible it could cause ignition system damage on a computer controlled system

There are switches on the back of the tach to select 4-6-8 Cyl engines I bet this is your problem.
It sounds like it is set for an 8 cyl engine. I bet if you switch it to 4 the Rpm will about double!

Enthusiasts have long bemoaned that Europe gets models we don’t, even if they share a name-tag on both sides of the Atlantic. It wasn’t that hard to keep secret when you needed friends traveling there to tell you what you’re missing, but globalization and the web have given everyone access. So Ford’s 2012 Focus ends the discussion about “ours” and “theirs” and brings us the best Focus since the SVT of last decade.
We won’t get all the engine options available overseas, including, at least for now, any diesels, but we will get a hot-hatch EcoBoost powered ST. And what they have right now is plenty good.
Nothing really jumps out in particular, rather it’s the synergy at work that makes this Focus so good. The engine for example is a 2-liter four-cylinder twin-cam with direct injection; no turbocharger or supercharger, just smooth, refined, progressive output on par with Honda’s 1.8 liter. Horsepower peaks at 160 at 6,500 rpm and torque at 146 lb-ft at 4,450 so there’s power when you want it, and you’d better pay attention to the tach because there’s no audible clue the engine’s working hard.

The Harmonizer is very nice. Not only for the tach feature, but because it tells you how much out of balance you are. The spec for my '05 GS is anything less than 25 mbar at idle is OK. Since the only way to sync that bike at idle is to re-adjust the valves knowing the actual out-of-balance amount is important. Last service the Harmonizer told me there was a 14 mbar difference. No worries!
